Contemporary styling with advanced technological features, the Seiko Kinetic watch is the world’s first quartz watch powered by human movement. By the simple movement of your wrist, a very efficient capacitor charges itself. Once the capacitor is fully charged, it captures and stores energy for up to six months. Kinetic- the most advanced electronic watch technology. Environmentally friendly. Features include- Black Ion Finish case and bracelet, black dial with date display, one way rotating elapsed timing bezel and screwdown see thru caseback, and water-resistance to 330 feet. Kinetic: A powerhouse in technological innovation
Like mechanical and quartz, Kinetic is a platform. Over the past 20 years, SEIKO has created on this platform a suite of Kinetic movements, each bringing unique features to the consumer.
It was at the 1986 Basel Fair that SEIKO unveiled its first Kinetic prototype. Introduced under the trial name of 'AGM', it was the first watch in the world to convert kinetic movement into electrical energy. It was the first step in a development that, 20 years later, has made Kinetic synonymous with environmental friendliness, high performance and long-lasting convenience to a generation of users worldwide. From the launch in 1988 of the first commercially available watch (then under the new name AGS) until today, over eight million Kinetic watches have been sold (as of 2007).
In 1998, Kinetic Auto Relay was released, extending the 'at-rest' operating period of the watch to a remarkable 4 years. 1999 saw the launch of the Ultimate Kinetic Chronograph, a masterpiece which fused the very best of SEIKO's mechanical and electronic watch making skills, and in 2003 another Kinetic Chronograph was launched. At Baselworld 2005, the Kinetic Perpetual made its first appearance, combining Kinetic convenience and longevity with a perpetual calendar, correct to the year 2100. In 2007, SEIKO's emotional technology Kinetic Direct Drive is introduced.

I am currently deployed to Iraq and the watch I came with stopped working so I thought I'd order a new watch. I wanted something that didn't require a battery, wouldn't stop working and that was reliable. Having owned a Seiko kintetic in the past it was natural for me to look at their selection.
I settled on this one because I don't need the bling. I like the black finish and red dial. I recieved this watch very quickly (I'm in Iraq) and began wearing immediately. I have had no issues with it and love it. This watch is not bulky like I expected it to be, very low profile on your wrist and wears comfortably. I wear this watch on combat missions, during PT, in the gym, everywhere. I only take it off when I sleep.
I would recommend this watch to anyone looking for good quality and a nice masculine watch. |
Simple and fashionable

| I wanted a basic watch that could act as an everyday watch as well as something could be worn out for the evening. The black band looks great, and I get more compliments than friends who spent much more for a flashy watch. I am more than satisfied with the purchase of this watch. |

| This watch is excellent. High quality, currently stationed in kuwait and it has held up against some of the worst weather and conditions possible. |

| What a beautiful piece of work by Seiko. I'm tired of replacing batteries and this technology seems as good as the eco drive by Citizen. I just had an expensive $350 pilot watch ruined by someone replacing the battery and not re-setting it correctly. Getting older and don't need all the fine detail anymore, and this watch just has that comfortable "right" feel to it....very solid....and yet you can view the movement through the translucent bottom. This will be my main timepiece from now on for every occasion. |
Great watch, good price.

| I received this watch recently and really like the style and functionality. It looks great, without being flashy. Its clearly tough enough to wear at the gym and the look also holds its own when worn in nicer dress at the office. If you like things that are understated and well made, this is your watch. |
Unsure at first .... but it is really Superb

Own many watches, Seiko Monster was my favorite, but was unsure of this as some of the negative comments held me off. Wanted a Luminox but not a plastic case and the are 4 time this cost. When it went to $129 I had to bite. At first I was not sure about the shinny black and the more of a gun metal black on the band and the bezel was very stiff to rotate. Also I was conserned that due to the fact it took a long time to get the winding charge to 30 day reserve too[fast rapid back and forth will help charge] it was unsure if the charge would hold.
No worries . I am a very picky person[just ask my wife] Now it is my first choice. Gotten many complements on it , even from an EMT friend with a Luminox[metal case one not plastic], and TAG and he wants one. Keeps perfect time, like the finish now as the contrast looks great, the bezel with some dry Teflon lube spray and use is fine now, the stem never has pulled out in wearing it, tension just right and I do not really need a screw down[I would prefer it] as I am not constantly having to adjust the watch like my auto winders and would worry about seal due to wear.
NO batteries to constantly change, with potential for dust and leaks each time you open the back. Accuracy is just great. You can check the charge and it has stayed at 30 days ever since I got it there, even sitting still for several days. I would pay the regular price even as the quality is excellent, even has drilled through holes for the band pins. Easily worth $200.
Band was easy to adjust[easier than the Monster] just right in size and weight for an average wrist and no hair pulling.
No defects, everything lines up and is flawless in the finish and is scratch resistant even with things coming in contact that would seem to cause a scratch.
Buy it you will not be disappointed, nothing in this price range comparable in Ion plated Black. I hate taking it off! |
AMAZING!

Imagine, if you will, a world where there is only one watch dealer with a store in every mall and row upon row of only one watch on display for every man, woman and child - the Seiko Kinetic Black Ion watch. This is the world I envision. Yes, the Seiko Kinetic Black Ion watch should be the official watch for all the people of planet earth!
This watch is heavy, which I like, but not cumbersome or clunky. It feels comfortable, solid and substantial - and it's extremely handsome to boot! It's readable at a glance which was essential to me and the very bright, clear luminous dial finishes off this practical and attractive package. I know it's going to be sturdy in the long term because of the of the reviews by our military guys in Kuwait and Iraq and, of course, it's a Seiko. Thanks, guys, for your service and your reviews!
By the way, click where it says "see all 4 customer photos" just below the initial picture. All of these pictures give you a very accurate representation of the contours and finish of the watch. It's a little more glossy and doesn't have the matte finish that the main picture shows. The shape (as you can see in the customer photos I referred to) isn't quite so flat either. As I said before, it has an extremely handsome and rugged look and the black band makes it both elegant and masculine.

I was concerned that this watch might be a little too big or heavy for me, but I bought it from a vendor with a good return policy (and one who's also a Seiko authorized dealer--that's VERY important, IMO.) The watch actually feels fine--not too big or too heavy at all. I love the higly readable hands and markers; no problem reading THIS watch quickly, in any light. (The "lume" on the hands and markers is excellent in low/no light.) The watch is really attractive IMO, and so far it's keeping perfect time. I love the idea of not needing a battery replacement every couple of years. The SKA389 is, IMO, a superb watch and a bargain at the price.
One note: I bought what turned out to be a "Feiko"--a counterfeit Seiko--from a big web vendor, and had to throw it away when it broke within a few months. Do yourself a favor, follow Seiko's advice, and BUY A SEIKO ONLY FROM AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. Turns out there are a LOT of "Feikos" out there.
UPDATE Aug 2010: I'm still very pleased with the SKA 389, but it turns out the black plating wears off the band pretty easily. I wear mine all day, every day, and the black plating is wearing away where the bottom of the band meets my desk. It isn't terrible, but it's a disappointment. I'll definitely go back to plain stainless steel for my next Seiko. |
Awesome Watch!

| I like this watch very much so far I very pleased. Took a little while to remember that I had to occasionally keep the hand the watch is on free while walking to insure charge. But now the charge is full so that isn't an issue anymore. If you get this type of watch remember to get the band sized it was it cost me only $5 at a Seiko dealer. |
Very good

| I was looking for a watch when my Seiko of 10 yrs stopped working but I really did not want to spend the $500 for a new one. At one time Seikos were relatively inexpensive but their prices have really gone sky- high. Then I saw this watch on sale at Amazon for $140 I ordered it. One day after it shipped the price of the watch went down to $129. I called up Amazon but they would not make an adjustment since the watch had already shipped. They told me to order again at the lower price and return the first watch. So now I have two watches bought at different prices. I have to make a decision about whether I want to return the more expensive one because Amazon has no more and the price is now much more. Maybe I will sell it. I have to say that the watch is a beaut. I like the styling and it feels very comfortable. The price tag on the watch is $450 so I really feel I got a bargain. So far the only complaint I have is that the watch skips every other second because it is not fully charged yet. It seems that you have to do some major shaking to get it fully charged initially. Once it is charged there should be no problem. Just an update a few months later. I love this watch. It keeps perfect time and I have gotten quite a few complements on its styling. Glad I bought it. |
